Saul makes a grave mistake early on in his kingship career.

Even though it may sound like a trivial matter to us, it wasn’t trivial to God. Saul was told to wait on Samuel to come to make the offerings to the Lord. Instead Saul himself offered the sacrifice instead of Samuel. Saul claimed he was doing a good thing by seeking the Lord’s favor through these offerings. The enemy was assembling for battle against him. Saul wanted God’s blessing before the battle.

The consequences for Saul’s disobedience…his kingdom would not endure. Had Saul obeyed and waited on Samuel, God would have established Saul’s kingdom forever.

Waiting is so hard for us, isn’t it? How often have we rushed ahead of the Lord and done things on our own. Oh, it’s easy to rationalize some of the things we do. We can make them sound so good, but if God isn’t in them, we miss the greater blessing God had planned for us. Life is so much easier and so much better if we will just wait on Him and let Him lead.
